4 Deliciously Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Recipes

By Shannon Crocker MSC RD PHEc

A friend of mine just told me he’s planning a Mexican-inspired Thanksgiving including roast turkey with spicy seasonings and sides, such as grilled corn, to go with it. Now I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Thanksgiving, but my family’s keen on switching things up this year, so I’m all in!

Are you open to trying something new this season? Whether you’re feeding a crowd or keeping it cozy, here is some bite-sized inspiration to get you started.

Turkey for a Crowd (with a Twist)

Feeding a crowd this Thanksgiving? This Miso Orange Glazed Turkey is for you. Miso and orange are the perfect sweet and salty compliment in this Japanese-inspired recipe. While there are many types of miso, each offering unique flavour notes, its signature umami flavour comes from fermented soybeans. The fermentation process also means miso delivers good-for-your-gut probiotics.

Try this whole turkey recipe alongside roasted sweet potatoes and sauteed green beans with toasted almonds. Are you a turkey leftover lover like me? This dish makes for fantastic leftovers to use in a lunch box salad, sandwiches or for topping a veggie stir fry.

The Small Group Gathering

Fall group gatherings call for cozy dishes shared with good friends. Warm spices from Indian cuisine in this comforting Pulled Turkey Korma are sure to set the vibe. Turkey breast pairs perfectly with traditional flavours from spices like garam masala and turmeric. Spices and herbs not only add flavour but can give a little boost of antioxidants in this dish as well.

No need to stress about what side dishes to make – this Korma recipe includes turmeric basmati rice and cauliflower. Got extras? The flavours in this meal develop even more over time, making it ideal for a quick and delicious leftover lunch or dinner.

Finger Foods for Friendsgiving

Thai Turkey Satay Skewers are sure to be a hit at your potluck-style Friendsgiving. Fresh lemongrass and cilantro create a vibrant marinade for turkey thighs that delivers a serious flavour pop. Don’t let the long ingredient list scare you off – these skewers are easy to make and cook in just 8 minutes! Even better? You can cook these ahead and serve them cold so you can spend more time with friends during the festivities.

Good to know: Turkey thighs are perfect for skewers – they are nutrient-rich and lean and stay juicy when grilled.

A Family-Sized Fiesta

This Coffee & Coriander Rubbed Turkey Breast is the meal on my radar this Thanksgiving! If you’re having a family-sized gathering too, this drool-worthy dinner bursting with Mexican-inspired flavours is perfect. Turkey breast is brined, then rubbed with a coffee, coriander, and brown sugar mixture, and then grilled. It’s served with roasted potato wedges and topped with a grilled jalapeno salsa that layers on more deliciousness. I think I’ll serve it with a citrusy cabbage slaw or kale salad with apples and pumpkin seeds for a hint of fall flavour.

No matter what size of gathering you are hosting, turkeys got you covered! Ask your butcher to customize the cut of turkey to meet your Thanksgiving needs.

Wishing you and yours a delicious (and nutritious) Thanksgiving.

Cheers,

Shannon
