6 Nourishing Turkey Soups for Easy Back to School Suppers

Article by: Shannon Crocker MSc RD PHEc

As we head towards the fall, with kids going back to school and more adults heading back to work, cooking meals at home, with nutrient-rich, minimally processed foods is one way you can help you and your family to stay healthy and well.

Making healthy meals that are also EASY is a super strategy to boost nutrition while keeping mealtime stress at a minimum.

That’s where turkey soup comes in!

A comforting bowl of warm turkey soup is nutritious, delicious and can be easy to make.

6 Nourishing Turkey Soups

Here are 6 soups to put on your menu this fall. One of my top time-saving tips is to make a double batch on the weekend to enjoy during the week and freeze some for another meal, another time.

  1. Turkey tortilla soup – a warm spicy soup that’s easy to make using leftover cooked turkey and some basic pantry staples. This soup will be on my menu on repeat!

Neat to know: Vitamin C in the tomatoes helps your body to absorb the iron and zinc in the turkey and black beans.

  1. African-Inspired Turkey and Peanut Stew – check out the make-ahead tips that will save you mealtime prep when making this flavourful stew.

Neat to know: A diet rich in veggies and fruits is especially important for a healthy immune system. Aim to make half your plate (or bowl!) filled with produce – like in this stew.

  1. One-Pot Turkey Lasagna Soup – this is so much easier than making lasagna in a pan and just as delicious!

Neat to know: Garlic breath is a good thing! Garlic (like in this lasagna soup) contains antioxidants that boast potential health-protecting benefits.

  1. Quick and Hearty Turkey Barley Soup – I love that this soup uses frozen veggies – a healthy, quick and budget-friendly option.

Neat to know: Barley gives you beneficial fibre for gut health. A healthy gut is key for a strong immune system.

  1. Classic Homemade Turkey Noodle Soup – there’s nothing better than a classic turkey soup to enhance emotional wellness.

Neat to know: Use leftover turkey thigh in this soup. It’s moist, full of flavour and even richer than white meat in immunity-strengthening nutrients like iron, zinc and selenium.

  1. Mexican Corn and Turkey Meatballs Soup – make a double batch of the meatballs and serve them in a veggie-filled nourish bowl for lunch another day.

Neat to know: Frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh and a super option when fresh veggies aren’t in season.

Eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods, including protein-packed turkey, gives you energy and provides your body with nutrients you need to keep your immune system strong and healthy.

Stay happy, healthy and well,
